The responsibility for stewarding the cultural heritage site is divided between three public bodies. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage, the Hordaland County Administration and the Municipality of Bergen are collaborating on the large-scale Bryggen Project. The project is funded by the Norwegian government in the form of grants to the Directorate for Cultural Heritage. Every year, around 20 million NOK is dedicated to this work. The funds are also being used to survey the conditions of the cultural deposits and on planning and implementing measures to preserve them. In 2011, an additional 45 million NOK was granted to the Directorate for Cultural Heritage, as an extraordinary measure to save the cultural deposits.
