In 1979, Bryggen was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The role Bergen played in the Hanseatic trade from the 14th to the 18th century was especially emphasised, as the old wharf was the only surviving example of an overseas Hanseatic Office. With its thick, organic cultural deposits and buildings dating from 1702, this is a complex, vulnerable and unique cultural heritage site. Originally, only the buildings were part of the cultural heritage site, but today, the underground cultural deposits are also included.
